    Finally got wireless to work in Linux - 
    it required a foreign D-Link card purchased through Ebay.
    Once plugged in, it all worked! I must have configged it successfully with all the other cards that didnt work...
    Generally, the wireless G standard does not work with Linux.  Stay away from it.
    
    Conveniently(not), the card which works in Linux crashes the WindowsXP partition on the laptop.
    So, it looks like i tote around 2 wireless cards.
